It’s surprising to know that Julie Benz’s first time in the spotlight was not as an actress but as an ice skater. She began skating at age 3 and ranked 13th in the 1988 U.S. Championships in junior ice dancing with her partner David Schilling. Ice skating ran in the family: her mother was an ice skater and her older siblings, Jeffrey and Jennifer, were the 1987 U.S. Junior Champions in ice dancing and competed internationally (her father was a surgeon). When Julie was 16, an injury forced her to change professions and many are glad she did!

Julie turned to acting and got involved in local theater. She studied acting at New York University and upon graduation, she moved to LA to pursue her career. Julie landed bit parts in various movies and television series, including guest spots on Married With Children, Sliders, Diagnosis Murder, Hang Time, and in the Aaron Spelling pilot, Cross Town Traffic.

In 1997, Julie, as well as her fellow Angel co-star Charisma Carpenter, auditioned for the title role of Buffy on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Both lost the role to Sarah Michelle Gellar. This was the second role Julie lost to Sarah; the first was the role of Kendall Hart on the daytime soap opera, All My Children. However, Julie did get a call back to play the vampire known as Darla, which has become her most famous role. In fact, Darla has the distinction of being the first vampire to appear on-screen in the pilot episode of Buffy. She did such a good job with that character that her role was expanded a few more episodes until she was killed off in the first season. Julie left her mark on the Buffy and Angel mythos and was invited back for essential flashback scenes on both shows. She stunned everyone at the end of the first season of Angel as her character returned from the dead.

Julie played a recurring role on Roswell as Kathleen Topolski. She also had a small, if not memorable, role in the 1997 movie, As Good As It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt (who both won Oscars for their performances). Some other films she appeared in include: The Brothers, A Fate Totally Worse Than Death, and Jawbreakers. She has a role in the upcoming miniseries, Taken, which is slated for a 2002 release.

Behind the camera, two of Julie’s greatest passions are shopping and cooking. As part of her official Web-site, she answers questions concerning fashion, makeup, and etiquette. For more information, check out the official Julie Benz official website.

Julie was born on May 1, 1972 in Pittsburgh, PA. She has been married to actor Jon Kassir, more widely known as the voice of the Crypt Keeper of Creep Show fame, since 1998. The couple lives in Los Angeles with their two dogs, Elvis and Gracie.

    Vampires

Darla, an Anglo-Saxon derivation meaning "Dear One", is anything but dear to those among the living. The young woman who came to be called Darla was a prostitute in the Virginia Colony. In 1609, she was sired on her deathbed by the Master, the self-proclaimed lord of the vampires and leader of the clan of vampires known as the Order of Aurelius. In a short period of time, Darla became a creatively scheming, not to mention deadly vampire in her own right, and also became the Master’s personal favorite.
Masquerading as an Irish noblewoman in Galway, Ireland in 1753, Darla transformed Liam into Angelus, the Scourge of Europe, training him, teaching him, and loving him for over 150 years. The two spent every deliciously bloody moment together, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. Darla and Angelus even created their own special little family of vampires throughout the centuries, first with James and Elizabeth, an undead Romeo and Juliet. The two gained the most notoriety when they paired with the deadliest members of their bloodline, Drusilla and Spike, in the latter half of the 19th century.

In 1898, fate came in the form of a beautiful gypsy girl, just one of Darla’s many inventive and carefully thought out gifts for her beloved Angelus. Little did Darla know that as a result of her gift, the girl’s family would restore Angelus’ soul. As a result, Darla rejected Angelus when his soul was returned — just when he needed her the most — throwing him out into the streets of Romania to fend for himself. Angelus unsuccessfully tried to get back in Darla’s good graces over the next two years. During the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, he refused to kill a baby Darla kidnapped for him. They would never meet again until nearly 100 years later.

Parting ways with Drusilla and Spike, Darla rejoined the Master’s Order of Aurelius. She arrived in Sunnydale, California in 1997, in an attempt to free her sire from the Hellmouth. At the same time, Angelus — now called Angel — also was in Sunnydale and in love with Buffy Summers the Vampire Slayer. Failing to bring him back into the fold, Darla attempted to trick Buffy into believing Angel fed off her mother, when in reality, it was Darla. Her plan failed miserably, however, and Darla was killed by Angel’s hand.

The Scrolls of Aberjian had a different future in mind for Darla, who was resurrected as a human by Wolfram & Hart in Los Angeles, California, in 2000. She was the first vampire to be a born-again human, a stark contrast to Angel, a human in the body of a vampire. The memories of Darla’s past, now tempered with a conscience, began to eat away at her. To make matters worse, she was dying of syphilis. Despite his best efforts to cure her, Angel failed; nonetheless, the human Darla was grateful. Before they could explore any other options, Drusillla returned and ushered Darla once again into the darkness.

Darla and Drusilla went on a killing spree in LA, betraying — and eventually slaughtering — a number of Wolfram & Hart lawyers. Angel broke up their alliance after setting them on fire. That didn’t stop Darla from tormenting him. In the throes of despair, Angel had sex with Darla in the hopes of losing his soul. When he didn’t in the aftermath, he told Darla to leave his city or else he’d kill her if he saw her again.

The night they copulated had unforeseen consequences: Darla was pregnant, despite the fact vampires cannot reproduce. The unborn baby was protected by a higher power, therefore making Darla unable to kill it. She returned to LA seeking Angel’s help. They learned the baby was part of a prophecy stated in the Nyazian scrolls. It was also revealed that the unborn child was a boy — a human boy with a soul.

However, since Darla was incapable of delivering a baby, the child was dying. Repenting her sins, Darla told Angel that this child was the one good thing they ever did together. In a selfless act, she staked herself, freeing the baby from her womb, leaving Angel to raise their son alone.

    Drusilla Bio

Drusilla was born in London, England, in the 19th century to a Catholic coal mining family. She lived with her parents and two sisters (she may have had more siblings).

Drusilla was gifted with the ability to catch glimpses of the future through visions. As a young woman, Drusilla was terrified by these visions. Her mother told her that she was cursed, that her visions were an affront of God.

It was through these visions that she came to the attention of the vampire Darla. Darla pointed the young Drusilla out to her love and vampire fledgling, Angelus. One day, in the year 1860, Drusilla had a vision of a terrible crash, and the next morning there was a cave-in at the local coal mines, in which two men perished. Drusilla, tormented by her mothers words that she was cursed, often visited the confessional to tell of her 'sins'.
On this day, the priest had met with his last confessor - Angelus. After killing him, Angelus was surprised to hear a voice from the confessional beside him. It was Drusilla's voice, and, taking on the role of the priest, Angelus had Drusilla tell him of her visions. She tells him that she doesn't mean to affront God, but Angelus tells her that the Lord has a plan for all creatures:

Angelus: "Even a Devil child like you."

    Drusilla: "A Devil?"

Angelus: "Yes! You're a spawn of Satan. All the Hail Marys in the world aren't going to help. The Lord will use you and smite you down. He's like that."

    Drusilla: "What can I do?"

Angelus: "Fulfil his plan, child: be evil. Just give in."

Drusilla: "No! I want to be good. I want to be pure."

Angelus: "We all do - at first. The world doesn't work that way."

Drusilla: "Father ... I beg you ... Please ... Please, help me."

And he did. After this encounter, Angelus, who was by this time a vampire of one hundred and seven years heaving been born to darkness in the year 1753, became obsessed with the young Drusilla. He killed all of those she loved - her whole family - before enacting every possible form of mental torture on her.

The ordeal left Drusilla tinkering on the edge of insanity. She finally escaped and fled to a convent where she was taken in by the nuns. On the day she was to take her Holy Orders and join the nuns in the service of God, Angelus appeared. He slaughtered the nuns as Darla appeared. It was here, with Drusilla now totally insane, that Angelus told Darla of his intention to turn Drusilla into a vampire. Drusilla ceased to be human after the infusion of Angelus' demonic blood.

Angel: "I did a lot of unconscionable things when I became a vampire. Drusilla was the worst. She was ... an obsession of mine. She was pure and sweet and chaste ..."

Buffy: "And you made her a vampire."

Angel: "First I made her insane."

After this, Drusilla, totally demented, remained with Darla and her Angelus. They eventually came across a young man named William around 1880 in London, who Drusilla took a particular liking to. William was transformed into a vampire by Drusilla, and she became his paramour. William was known as William the Bloody, because of the bloody awful poetry he had composed during his mortal life. Before killing them, he would torture his victims with railroad spikes, which eventually earned him the nickname Spike. Spike joined Drusilla, with Angelus and Darla and travelled with them. When Angelus' soul was restored to him Drusilla with Spike accompanied Darla into Romania to take revenge on the gypsies. The three of them were involved with the Boxer Rebellion in the late 19th century, in which Spike killed his first Slayer.
Spike doted on Drusilla, and fulfilled every one of her insane desires. Angelus and Spike often fought over Dru's affections and safety. While it seemed that Angelus created Drusilla out of boredom, he still cared for her, even though he didn't give her the attention she needed. The attention that Spike provided. Spike always tried to live up to the example provided by Angelus, which is probably why he turned out to be such a ruthless and evil creature. Drusilla stayed with Spike after Angelus' soul was returned to him by a gypsy curse.
Spike and Drusilla, bound together by immortal love, travelled throughout Europe, staying at places such as Paris, New York, Spain, and Prague. It was in 20th century Prague, the Bohemian capital (the modern capital of the Czech Republic) that Drusilla was attacked and nearly killed by an angry mob. Spike rescued her and they fled to Sunnydale. It was there on the Hellmouth that Drusilla, who had been severely weakened by the ordeal, would be able to return to full strength.
Drusilla indicated that she missed Prague, which would indicate that the two of them must have spent some time there. It may have been there that Drusilla had obtained her collection of dolls, her favourite of which was Miss Edith.

Spike killed the local vampire leader, the Anointed One, who had taken over after the death of the Master at the hands of Buffy the vampire slayer. Spike and Drusilla took over the local vampire gangs of the Hellmouth. It was here that Drusilla came across her sire, Angelus, who now called himself Angel. His soul had been returned, and he had been recruited by The Powers That Be, through a demon known as Whistler, to look over Buffy and ensure her survival. Out of all the atrocities he had committed during his days as a soulless vampire, his treatment of Drusilla still ranked as the worst.
Spike's plans to take Sunnydale were constantly thwarted by the slayer and her companions. Finally, Spike sent the Order of Taraka against the slayer to prevent her from interfering with the ritual that would restore Drusilla to her full strength. What Spike did not account for was the arrival of a second slayer, who had been activated following the temporary death of Buffy at the hands of the Master. Spike captured Angel for the ritual, which would see the life force of the sire transferred to its fledgling. The ritual got underway but was interrupted by the slayers and their allies. Angel was not killed by the ritual, and he was rescued before the church they were in came down on Spike and Drusilla. Thinking them destroyed, the slayers left. However, they had not been killed. Drusilla had indeed been restored, and she easily carried the crumpled body of her love to safety.
For Drusilla's birthday, Spike, wheelchair bound following the incident, brought together the dismembered pieces of the Judge, a demon who had the power to suck the life out of those with virtuous souls. Buffy and Angel attempted to stop this but failed. The Judge was assembled and Buffy and Angel were chased off. After this, Buffy and Angel hopped on the good foot and did the bad thing. This broke the gypsy curse that had restored Angel's soul.

Angelus was back, and the first thing he did was find his Drusilla. Angelus plotted with Spike and Drusilla to set the Judge loose on Sunnydale. He and Drusilla accompanied the Judge to Sunnydale Mall, where Buffy and one mean looking rocker-launcher awaited them. The Judge was destroyed, and Angel's transformation was made known.
Throughout the next few months, Spike and Angelus competed for Drusilla's affections. For Valentine's Day, Spike gave Dru a gold necklace featuring rubies embedded in a pendant, but Angelus gave her the still warm heart of a young girl, which more appealed to Drusilla's absent mind.

A few months later, excavators uncovered the tomb of the demon Akathla, which was then stolen by Angelus and Drusilla. The demon Akathla was said to have the ability to create a vortex that could suck the human world into Hell. Angelus failed to revive the demon, and decided that they needed help from Giles, Buffy's Watcher, who was well versed in ancient rituals. While Angelus distracted Buffy, Drusilla went after Giles.
When she arrived with her vampire troops, Drusilla discovered that the second vampire slayer, Kendra was there with Giles. While the others dealt with Buffy's friends, Drusilla faced off with Kendra. After fighting, Drusilla used her mental powers to put Kendra into a daze. When she was certain Kendra was in her power and totally warped, Drusilla slit Kendra's throat with the nail of her right index finger. Drusilla had killed the slayer, which activated the next, Faith.

What no one knew, was that Spike had recovered from his injuries. Tired of competing for Drusilla's affections, he approached Buffy and offered her a deal: he'd help her take out Angelus and Akathla, if she's allow him and Drusilla to leave Sunnydale and never return. She reluctantly agreed.
After Drusilla used her mental powers to trick Giles into giving her the details of the ritual to awaken Akathla, Angelus engaged in the ceremony. It was interrupted by Buffy's arrival. Before Angelus could do anything, Spike rose from his wheelchair and attacked Angelus with a metal fire poker. After knocking him out, Drusilla lunged at Spike and the two of them fought each other while Buffy took care of the rest of the vampires. Angelus awakened during the ordeal and drew the sword which had killed Akathla out of him, opening the vortex that would pull the earth into Hell. This distracted Drusilla, and Spike was able to choke her until she lost consciousness. Meanwhile, Buffy's friend Willow completed the original gypsy curse that had restored Angel's soul. As Buffy was about to deal the final blow, Angel's soul was restored, but she killed him anyway, to prevent the destruction of the earth, and to prevent the eternal suffering of its inhabitants.

Spike drove off out of Sunnydale with Drusilla unconscious beside him. He took her to Brazil, but the ordeal had opened a rift in their immortal love. Drusilla told Spike that he had gone soft. She began flirting with every demon she came across. Spike even caught her kissing a Chaos demon, who are apparently 'all slime and antlers, they're disgusting!'. Spike declared that he didn't have to take that, and Drusilla said 'Fine'. So he said 'Fine, do whatever you like'. And then Drusilla said that they could still be friends. Drusilla left Spike for a Chaos demon.

After returning to Sunnydale to find a way to win Dru back, Spike captured Willow and told her that she would do a love spell for him. Before the spell was finished however, Spike was attacked by his old minions, sent by the current vampire leader, Mr. Trick, and his boss Mayor Wilkins. In the ensuing fight, in which he was helped by Buffy and the restored Angel who had returned from Hell, Spike decided that he had been all wrong headed about the situation. He declared that he had to be the man he used to be again, the man Dru loved. He said that he would go back to Brazil, find Dru, tie her up, torture her, until she liked him again.

Returning a year later, Spike announced that Drusilla had left him again, this time for a Fungus demon.

The next year, Drusilla resurfaced in Los Angeles. She had been approached by the corrupt law firm Wolfram & Hart to help them on a project. That project was the removal of her sire, Angel, who had been causing them trouble. But Wolfram & Hart did not want Angel simply dead, they wanted to hurt him. They had resurrected Angel's sire, Darla, to try to bring Angel down, but that plan had failed. Darla had become too plagued by her human soul, and had run away to Angel to try and find some peace. Drusilla had been called by Wolfram & Hart to remove Darla's soul. This was achieved by Drusilla by making Darla back into a vampire.
Drusilla sired her own vampiric grandmother, afterwards taking her to a plant nursery to await her awakening to the world of the undead. Angel found her hiding place, but Drusilla stopped him before he could kill Darla before she awakened. When Darla and Drusilla met back up after the fight, Darla was very angry at Drusilla. She dragged her onto the street and threw her in the path of several cars before Dru broke down in tears and apologized to Darla. Dru told her that she did what she thought Darla wanted.
Drusilla got a call from Holland Manners of Wolfram & Hart telling Darla and her that they should have a massacre. What he didn't count on was the two of them choosing a Wolfram & Hart wine-tasting party as their target for their massacre. After an extensive shopping spree, Dru and Darla descended on Holland Manner's home, killing his wife after she invited them in, and then targeting the lawyers themselves in the wine cellar. Angel arrived to stop them, but instead allowed them to kill the lawyers. Darla killed Holland, and Drusilla had taken a particular liking to Lilah as Angel locked the cellar doors and returned home.
Drusilla, along with Darla, massacred from fifteen to twenty lawyers in the cellar. But they let Lindsey McDonald and Lilah Morgan live, as Darla believed that maintaining an alliance with Wolfram & Hart would be beneficial to her and Drusilla's plans. They revealed to Lindsey and Lilah their intentions to make themselves the big noise in the Los Angeles underground.

Drusilla and Darla made themselves known to the demon populace of Los Angeles at a kind of demon fight club. Drusilla tore off the ears of a disrespectful demon, sending a clear message to the rest of the demons that she and Darla were not to be triffled with. Darla told the group that her and Drusilla needed some 'muscular slaves' to help them in their crusade of destruction. All who thought they had the potential to fight were told to meet in an auto-repair shop. But Drusilla was troubled - she could sense Angel in the crowd, but he fled. When Drusilla and Darla arrived at the auto-repair shop, they found the mangled and dismembered bodies of a host of demons. Angel was sitting on a car, smeared with blood and gore. Drusilla sensed something was amiss as Darla spoke to Angel. He responded by flicking his cigarette into the pool of gasoline that Darla and Drusilla were standing in.

Drusilla and Darla went up in flames, but Darla was able to breach a fire hydrant with a sledgehammer, which doused her and Drusilla.
Several weeks later, Drusilla reappeared in Sunnydale, having left Los Angeles without informing Darla or Lindsey. Drusilla revealed herself to Spike, telling him that she'd returned to turn Spike back to his killing ways. She told him she knew about the chip in his head, going so far to say that she could see it within his brain. When Harmony came upon the two, she blasted Drusilla for hurting Spike so much, and told Drusilla of Spike's emotional problems spawned from his break-up with Drusilla. Finally, Spike turned Harmony away, telling her that he was back.

Spike and Drusilla, reunited, set out for the Bronze, the local dance club. Drusilla spotted out two young lovers, and indicated them to Spike. Spike and Dru proceeded to the two's location, Drusilla killing the girl and handing her over to Spike. After a moments hesitation, Spike fed from the dead girl while Drusilla watched on, drinking from the boy
The two vampires returned to Spike's crypt to find Buffy there. Drusilla stunned Buffy with a taser, before Spike turned on Drusilla with the taser. Drusilla awoke tied to a pier, with Buffy across from her chained to a stone arch. Spike appeared and told Buffy that he would kill Drusilla if Buffy told him that there was the slightest chance of Spike and Buffy having a future together. Buffy declared that there was not, but Spike was interrupted by a cross-bow weilding Harmony.
As the two fought, Drusilla freed herself of her bonds and attacked Buffy. Before she could kill her, Spike intervened. Drusilla told Spike that he was too far gone for her to help him, and returned to Los Angeles.

This is where Drusilla's story hangs …

    Other Vampires

    The Master

The Master, whose real name was Heinrich Joseph Nest, was a supremely powerful vampire who led the Brethren of Aurelius.  About six hundred years old, the Master has been referred to by Joss as "the most powerful of vampires," although other vamps such as Kakistos probably lived to an older age. In 1609, the Master turned a young prostitute dying of syphilis in the Virginia Colony and eventually gave her the name Darla.  She was a member of the Order, the Master's favorite, and apparently spent a good bit of time with him until she left with Angelus in 1760.  She seems to have returned to "the fold" sometime after Angelus' final disappearance in 1900.

The Master came to the U.S. sometime during the 1930s and tried to open the Hellmouth to free the Old Ones which he worshipped.  Due to the Sunnydale earthquake of 1937, the Master became stuck between the human and demon dimensions and remained that way for sixty years.  During that time, he made plans for the "Harvest" that would free him and allow him to take over Sunnydale.  The preparations were left to Luke, his powerful, almost undefeatable chief acolyte; he hadn't been defeated since "1843. Madrid. He caught me sleeping."  The Harvest would make Luke a vessel through which the lives he took would give the Master strength, enabling him to escape.  The Order's tendency to avoid the human world, however, served Luke no good; mistaking electric light for sunlight, he was distracted long enough to get slain by Buffy in March 1997.

After his death, Darla became the Master's second-in-command, and they continued to attempt to release the Master.  Their ranks quickly became diminished, however, as they lost  Zachary, a powerful fighter, Thomas, whose greatest vampiric skill was seducing young girls by offering to take them out for ice cream, and Jesse, a friend of Xander's who had been captured, turned, and used as bait.  Meanwhile, Darla attempted to win Angel back to the Order by forcing him to kill the Slayer; but when she threatened Buffy's life, Angel staked his own Sire to protect her.  The Order's only hope, it appears, was the small child-vampire known as the Anointed One.

Colin was a cute little boy until the Order of Aurelius got a hold of him; from that day forth he was a cute little Antichrist designed to do evil.  As the Anointed One (the "Annoying One) to Spike), whose coming was prophesied in the twelfth century by Aurelius, his purpose was to help the Master defeat the Slayer.  It didn't work.  Although the Pergamum Codex correctly prophesied the Slayer's death at the hands of the Master, a little drowning wasn't enough to keep Buffy down.  Her blood enabled the Master to escape, only to end up impaled on broken library furniture.

The Master was so powerful, however, that when his body turned to dust, his skeleton remained; the remaining members of the Order attempted to resurrect him, led by the Anointed One with the aid of Absalom, who apparently worked Colin's spokesman.  He was set on fire by Buffy (When She Was Bad).

Following the Master's death and failed resurrection, the Anointed One seems to have been in charge; he was displaced, however, in September 1997 by Spike, the Master's great-great-grandchilde, who killed the Order's leader by hauling him into direct sunlight.  He made a lot of changes in the way the Brethren had done things for centuries; announcing that "from now on we're gonna have a little less ritual and a little more fun around here," he put a stop to the chanting, rites, and penance on which the Aurelians placed such an emphasis.  Spike remained in power for the next four months until a strategically placed pipe organ put him in a wheelchair.  At this point his Sire and lover, Drusilla, appears to have become the one in charge.

In early 1998, however, Angel lost that pesky soul of his and took over Spike and Dru's minions.  Those that survived the Acathla showdown might still remain in Sunnydale, but the Order, for all intents and purposes, seems to have disbanded.  The only sign of them we've seen since then is when a wish made by Cordelia Chase resulted in an alternate reality in which the Master had been triumphant.  He ran Sunnydale from the Bronze with the vampire versions of Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, his chief minions and possibly his Childer as well.  Although the Wishverse Master survived, Xander and Willow were staked by Buffy and Oz respectively.  Vampire Willow eventually found her way to the Buffyverse reality, where she turned a young girl named Sandy; Sandy was staked by Riley Finn in late 2000, leaving Darla, Angel, Drusilla and Spike the only remaining members of the Order.
